Show Up...

Many people talk about God showing up in their lives at specific times. I have always loved the phrase "Show Up and Show Out." Jeremiah 9:24, "But let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord." In this scripture, the reference is made that if we know the Lord, we know that He is steadfast, He is righteous, and He loves.
I read an article from Reclaim Today that described the different ways that God shows up metaphorically in scripture. God is our protector and comfort. In Deuteronomy 32:11-12, like an eagle that stirs up its nest and hovers over its young that spreads its wings to catch them and carries them aloft. The Lord alone led him; no foreign god was with him." God is compared to an Eagle. He protects us as an Eagle protects his young. God spreads His power over us and nurtures us, leads us, and loves us.
God is referred to as a river in Isaiah 33:21: "There the Lord will be our Mighty One. It will be like a place of broad rivers and streams. No galley with oars will ride them, no mighty ship will sail them." God, again, is our protector, our defender. God is our light. In Psalm 84:11-12,
God is our source of light, our sun and our shield. He gives us the best thing, His presence. The psalmist asks God not to take that light away from him, to give generously.. He wants God to show out with that blessing. "For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly. O Lord of hosts, blessed is the one who trusts in you!"
God is also our rock. Just like a rock we can hide behind or creatures can hide under, we can take that refuge in God. He is strong and stable and trustworthy. Psalm 18:2, "The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold."
Psalm 104:2-3, "The Lord wraps himself in light as a with a garment; he stretches out the heavens like a tent and lays the beams of his upper chambers on their waters. He makes the clouds his chariot and rides on the wings of the wind." God is like a blanket. He covers me. I am wrapped in His love and His protection. He made everything, and He made me.
You see, God is ever present. God doesn't just show up when we think we need Him, He shows up every day, every minute, and every second of our lives. When we say God "Shows Up", I think those are the times we see Him in major roles, but make no mistake, He is ever present all the time. He is not limited to just the events in which we think that He makes the biggest impact. He is continually present and working within our lives for our good because He loves us.
