Fixer…

Have you ever known someone who tries to fix everything? Just as we go to God, my husband and I go to each other frequently with frustrations, issues (problems), concerns, and anything that makes us laugh or troubles us. We talk about all things in our lives. He often tells me, "I don't need you to fix it. I need to be able to talk about it."
You see, he knows me like my Father. He knows that I will try to fix things because that is who I am. When given anything, my mind immediately goes to "What can I do to help with this?" In essence, "How can I fix the problem?" That comes from my growing up as the one who had to "fix" everything. I had to fix everything from meals, appliances, and household objects that broke, how I was going to find what we ate, getting money, and how to take care of everyone around me in a house full of abuse. Only the verbal and hunger were heaped on my siblings; the physical and other types of abuse were mine alone. So, I grew up learning to fix things to avoid as much as possible what was to come if the problems continued. That has continued into adult life, and I am quite literally the worst person to talk to because my mind immediately goes into fix mode.
A repairer, restorer, or mender would be a fixer. So, what does the Bible say about "Fixers?" Although the Bible doesn't explicitly use the word fixer, the Bible does talk about who the Fixer is. The Bible speaks about who the restorer and repairer is within our lives. That is Jesus, our Lord and Savior. He is daily "fixing" our lives and the lives of those around us when we become His child, John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." We can put everything in His hands to "fix". He took that burden from us. It is not my responsibility to try to fix other people's problems. It is my responsibility to go to God on their behalf and intercede for them in all things. James 5:16, "Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working." What a relief it is to know that we don't have to worry about fixing problems. We know that all things work for our good if we love God (Romans 8:28). We can simply put these things in His hands and let Him work. Now, am I going to say that I don't keep trying to fix? No! If you know me, it is a daily struggle. But by the grace of God, I am learning to lean on the one who can fix it all, my Savior.
