A Little Like David…

Everyone is like David in some way. David was considered a man after God’s own heart. He desired to be close to God. Acts 13:22, “But God hath raised him up, and hath testified of him, that he was a man after his own heart, who will do all my will".
I had the privilege of watching “David” at the Sight and Sound Theater. I’ve been reading through Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles and I do know the story of David. But as I was watching David’s life play out on stage, I began to think about how much we have in common with David.
David desired worship with God. So do we. The fellow Christians I know love to come to the Lord in worship. I treasure this time. Song service is an integral part of that worship. Praising and entering God’s presence with complete reverence is precious. We build an intimate knowledge of God and He desires our presence as well.
David wanted to do God’s will. David sought guidance from God when he faced challenges, and even in his day-to-day life. He became a shepherd and took care of his sheep. He praised God. Then when he was faced with fulfilling God’s challenges of giants, he courageously accepted God’s orders and slayed not only Goliath, but other giants. Giants that were not in stature, but in might and strength. We slay giants daily with the hand of our Lord. He refused to take Saul’s life although he had the opportunity. He was tested by fire and found to have favor with God. Just as God is testing us through fire and shows us grace. God had mercy on David just as He has mercy on us.
David fell from grace. He made mistakes and stumbled just as we make mistakes. David felt a separation from God and knew he had fallen short, but God loved David as much as He loves us. Each of us will sin. That is inevitable. But God…Romans 5:8, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” David came to God and repented. We can come to God in repentance. Acts 3:19, "Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.”
Lastly, just like David, God has a purpose for us. He promises us that we will always be with Him. 1 Corinthians 1:26-29, "For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.” God chose us, just as He chose David. Humbled us, just as David. David, a lowly shepherd and us, the least of these, to do His will and to fulfill His purpose.
You see, we are all A Little Like David.
